Fine jewellery is built to last, but how it is stored and worn day to day affects how long it actually keeps its shine. A few consistent habits do more than any occasional deep clean.
Do put jewellery on last, after perfume, lotion and hairspray. These products contain chemicals that dull metal finishes and can cloud gemstones over time, and applying them after jewellery is on means the jewellery absorbs the residue directly.
Do store pieces separately — in individual pouches or a lined jewellery box with compartments — rather than tangled together in one drawer. Chains knot, and harder stones can scratch softer metals and pearls when they rub against each other.
Don’t wear jewellery while swimming, showering or cleaning. Chlorine and household cleaning agents are especially harsh on gold-plated pieces and can damage gemstone settings over repeated exposure.
Don’t use a generic cleaning solution on everything. Pearls and soft gemstones need a soft, dry cloth and should never be soaked; gold and diamond pieces can usually handle a mild soap-and-water clean, but it is worth checking per gemstone before improvising.
Do get prongs and clasps checked periodically if a piece is worn often. Loose settings are the single most common cause of a lost stone, and it is a quick check that prevents an expensive loss.
